U.S.S. Missouri Memorial Association
Chief Petty Officer Legacy Center
Client Challenge
The USS Missouri Memorial Association was seeking development of a visitor center to be installed on board the USS Missouri battleship. The challenge was to create an environment in a historically correct visitor center telling the story of the Chief Petty Officer, and giving the visitor a sense of the CPO’s role in Naval history – all in the very limited space characteristic of a battleship.
Strategic Solution
To meet this challenge, H.B. Stubbs Companies combined images, artifacts and words into an environment which would appeal to the emotion as well as the intellect in re-creating the story of the CPO. The structure was created with flexible, contemporary metal posts and lighting fixtures, with content displayed in colorful and organized graphic panels; a graphic background became the atmosphere, the spatial organization of the content. In addition, H.B. Stubbs Companies designed and produced an interactive video to engage the visitor in the experience, and included artifact cases for period uniforms, a Medal of Honor, and CPO supplies and equipment.
